Benin and Togo Mission Report
During our last mission to West Africa, our team carried out several large-scale humanitarian projects in Benin and Togo as part of our commitment to health and local development. 1. Support for the orphanage in Benin: fish farm and vegetable garden We visited an orphanage in Benin where we funded the construction of a fish farm and the establishment of a vegetable garden. These facilities aim to improve the orphanage's food self-sufficiency and create a sustainable source of income. Two part-time employees were hired to maintain the facility, with a commitment to cover their salaries for one year. Ultimately, the income generated from the sale of fish and vegetables should allow the orphanage to cover its costs and consider expanding its infrastructure. 2. Partnership with the Cotonou Orchid Lions Club We signed a partnership agreement with the Cotonou Orchid Lions Club, which will represent our association and oversee all our activities in Benin. This collaboration will strengthen our presence on the ground and ensure better monitoring of our projects. 3. Needs Assessment of the Amlamé Hospital (Togo) In Togo, we traveled to Amlamé to conduct a needs assessment of the local hospital. This assessment will allow us to better target our future work in the region. 4. Support for the Klouékanmè Shingles Hospital (Benin) In southwest Benin, we visited the Klouékanmè zonal hospital. We brought syringes and small medical supplies. A needs assessment was also conducted, revealing a significant shortage of supplies. In response, we have undertaken to provide them with a consultation table, which we will ship by sea, and all the waiting room furniture for adults and children.' 5. Strengthening the Optical Workshop at Kandi Hospital (Benin) Finally, we fulfilled our commitments to the optical workshop we established at the Kandi District Hospital in northern Benin. We delivered 400 pairs of glasses for populations in precarious situations, as well as an electric reading test kit for the eye examination room. Additional equipment, including syringes, splints for the orthopedic department, and small medical equipment, was also provided. Conclusion This mission helped strengthen our local roots and lay the foundations for future health and food development projects. We thank all our partners and donors who make these actions possible.
Benin
In Kandi, we conducted numerous visual screenings followed by cataract surgeries when needed, as well as distributions of appropriate glasses. Additionally, we provided organizational training in the emergency department of the zone hospital. Furthermore, we established an optical workshop and a glasses retail store within the hospital under the direction of the ophthalmologist. We trained three optical assembly and sales workers and committed to providing them with free frameless glasses for as long as the association exists, aiming to reduce costs for the population. We also ensure the maintenance of the provided equipment and provide ongoing training for the optical department staff. At the zone hospital, we supply medications for all departments. In Tori Bossito village, about forty kilometers from Cotonou, we conducted visual screenings and distributed three hundred pairs of appropriate glasses. We plan to return as needed. In March 2024, our association, Solidarité Hospitalière, had the privilege of participating in a special inauguration event in Torri Bossito. In collaboration with another association, Regard du Monde, we contributed to the construction of a brand-new canteen at a local school. During the inauguration ceremony, we had the honor of representing our organization and delivering a speech highlighting the importance of this project for the school community. The schoolchildren also played a central role by welcoming us with joyful and inspiring songs. This new canteen represents much more than just a building. It embodies a space for food, sharing, and growth for the schoolchildren. By replacing the old open-air canteen, this new infrastructure provides a more hygienic and safe environment for the children's meals. We firmly believe that such improvements not only contribute to the physical well-being of the students but also enhance their academic development by creating a conducive learning environment. We are deeply grateful to have been able to participate in this initiative and to see the smiles on the children's faces as they discovered their new canteen. This event exemplifies our continued commitment to supporting local communities and working together for a better future for all. The orphanage of Sainte Famille de Djeffa. We are honored to contribute to the well-being of the children at the Sainte Famille de Djeffa orphanage, under the compassionate leadership of Brother Mesmin and his dedicated team of brothers. These 57 children, who may be orphaned by one or both parents, find much more than shelter here; they find a warm home where love and care are ever-present. With our recent donations of educational games and clothing, we seek to commit to their growth and education. Located near their school, the orphanage provides a familial environment where children can grow securely, surrounded by a loving community. But their vision extends beyond this: with the ambition to become self-sufficient by clearing a marshy part of their land to create a garden, and perhaps even a small farm in the future. This vision illustrates their commitment to providing children with a sustainable and prosperous future. However, their success largely relies on the support of generous donors like you. By contributing to our cause, you help ensure that these children continue to receive the personalized attention and comprehensive support they need to thrive. Join us in this noble mission and together, let's make a difference in the lives of these children.
Senegal
Mission Report Conducted by Solidarité Hospitalière in Senegal from September 7 to September 14, 2024 As part of the activities of the Association Solidarité Hospitalière, an 8-day mission was carried out in Senegal from September 7 to 14. The team, consisting of Olivier Janaud, Sébastien Bégel, and Ulysse da Silva, President of the Association, was warmly welcomed by the Director of the Thiadiaye Hospital Center at Blaise Diagne Airport in Dakar, where we arrived on Saturday. He organized a program for us, allowing us to visit 5 health posts located in surrounding villages. He first received us at his home for dinner, and then accompanied us to withdraw CFA from a bank. After a quick visit to the beach, he then took us to our hotel. List of Health Posts On Monday, September 9, we were to go to NDIAGUIANIAO. On the 10th to SANDIARA. On Wednesday the 11th to SESSENE. On the 12th to FISSEL. And on Friday the 13th to THIADIAYE. Mission Objective Our main mission was to conduct visual screenings, perform eye examinations, and provide free glasses to local patients. The goal was to treat between 40 and 60 people at each health post, ensuring that we offered glasses suitable for their visual correction. Mission Progress At each health post, we were received with great hospitality, and we did our best to meet the patients' needs, thanks to the rigorous organisation and the commitment of everyone involved. The mission took place under good conditions, although the volume of patients to be treated was sometimes greater than we had anticipated. We worked efficiently to provide quality care. Results and Impressions We felt that the patients were particularly satisfied with the services received, and this recognition made the mission even more rewarding for us. This sense of contributing to a noble cause strengthened our resolve to continue our efforts; unfortunately, due to high demand, it was not possible to meet everyone's needs. However, we gave our best and hope to return for future missions with even better resources. We still managed to distribute 300 pairs of glasses to the population during this mission. Conclusion This mission allowed us to see the importance of our commitment and the positive impact of our intervention. We will continue to work on improving our actions on the ground and to provide even broader support during our upcoming activities. As President of the Association, I had the pleasure of participating in this humanitarian mission alongside Olivier Janaud and Sébastien Bégel. I thank them both, and especially Sébastien, who, although not a member of the association, dedicated his time by taking leave to accompany us.
